Silverware & Specialty Items

Insurance and Fair Market Appraisals

While jewelry appraisal is a main part of our services, we also have clients bring in specialty items inherited from their family and don't have any idea as to its worth.  There have been many times that clients have brought in antique and vintage silverware, arms or armor which have been passed down in the family which can be highly valuable.  We at JEM Logics Inc. also have decades of experience offering our appraisal services for specialty items such as antique silverware, Japanese swords (Antique and Wartime Pieces), antique weapons, as well as meteorites and rough gemstones and crystals. We can help with identifying and valuing most of the specialty items below.

All of our appraisals are USPAP compliant.

Most appointments are done in person and last between 30 minutes to 1 hour per item and include,  but not limited to the following:

  • Complete evaluation of your piece
  • Potential history of the piece (if vintage or antique)
  • Evaluation of any potential damage issues
  • Recommendations for proper care
  • Potential insurance replacement or fair market value report (FMV)*

*The client will receive the completed report usually within 2 days, but no later than 1 week from the evaluation

Japanese Swords

"The Japanese sword, domestically known as Katana, has always been a part of over a thousand years of Samurai’s legacy. What initially took as Samurai’s weapon is now one of the most iconic cultural symbols.

The word Katana has long been spread all around the world. And the fact that today’s citizens are blessed to experience Katana’s profound culture is all thanks to our ancestors. That includes Samurai themselves, the smiths, and feudal lords, who strived to give light to the aesthetic side of it.

Their contribution to our living is never to be forgotten, and you are here to witness everything about the live-breathing and majesty of Katana." (Samuraiswordmuseum.jp).

Silverware

As jewelry appraisers, we deal with many items made of precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum which are in the scope of our appraisal services.  We can help identify and value items such as silver flatware service sets, candlestick holders and the like.  If you have received or inherited these types of items, they can hold significant value that should be properly categorized and appraised.

Meteorites

"Meteorites are fragments of rock or metal that fall to Earth from space. They are very rare, but many people find unusual rocks or pieces of metal and wonder if they might have found a meteorite.

Meteorites have several properties that help distinguish them from other rocks:

  • Density: Meteorites are usually quite heavy for their size, since they contain metallic iron and dense minerals.
  • Magnetic: Since most meteorites contain metallic iron, a magnet will often stick to them. For “stony” meteorites, a magnet might not stick, but if you hang the magnet by a string, it will be attracted.
  • Unusual shape: iron-nickel meteorites are rarely rounded. Instead, they have an irregular shape with unusual pits like finger prints in their surface called “regmaglypts.”
  • Fusion crust: stony meteorites typically have a thin crust on their surface where it melted as it passed through the atmosphere.

Meteorites do NOT have the following:

  • Light-colored crystals: Quartz is a common, light-colored crystal in Earth’s crust, but it is not found on other bodies in the solar system.
  • Bubbles: volcanic rocks or metallic slag on Earth often have bubbles or vesicles in them, but meteorites do not.
  • Streak: if you scratch a meteorite on an unglazed ceramic surface, it should not leave a streak. A dense rock that leaves a black or red streak probably contains the iron minerals magnetite or hematite, respectively, neither of which are typically found in meteorites." (https://www.usgs.gov/)
